Ways of mitigating high fines % on pelleted feeds
The most demanding pelleted feed types in terms of % fines are broiler feeds, duck feeds and fish feeds. The low % fines requirement for these pelleted feeds comes from the fact that these animals will not bother to ingest the very small particles of feeds, which end up as wastage, thus lowering their feed intake, sub-optimizing their performance, thereby adding up to the total cost of production.
The presentation discusses practical ways of achieving the correct pellet durability through the proper combination of particle size reduction, steam conditioning, pellet cooling, sieving and post-pellet liquid application. It also gives practical tips in troubleshooting situations in the production line where the % fines suddenly increase to the point of rejection.
