To preserve poultry, the most common method is freezing it in airtight packaging, which is considered the best way to store it long-term; for shorter periods, you can refrigerate it properly by keeping it separated from other foods and on the bottom shelf of the fridge, ensuring it’s wrapped tightly to prevent contamination and maintain quality.

  • Freezing

Freezing is a good option for long-term preservation. It stops microbial growth and slows down the action of enzymes. To freeze poultry, wrap it tightly in foil or plastic wrap and label it with the date. Frozen poultry is safe indefinitely.

  • Canning

Canning involves sealing meat in a container and heating it to kill microorganisms that can spoil food. Canned products can be stored at room temperature indefinitely.

  • Chilling

Chilling can help reduce the surface temperature of meat and prevent microscopic organisms from developing

To preserve poultry, there are several methods you can use, depending on how long you want to store it and the available equipment:

    1. Refrigeration:

Keep poultry in the fridge at or below 40°F (4°C).

It can be stored for 1-2 days for raw poultry and 3-4 days for cooked poultry.

Always store poultry in airtight packaging or tightly wrapped in plastic or foil.

    2. Freezing:

If you want to preserve poultry for a longer period, freezing is an excellent method.

For raw poultry, store it in a vacuum-sealed bag or heavy-duty freezer bag to prevent freezer burn. It can be kept in the freezer for up to 1 year.

For cooked poultry, wrap it tightly in foil or place it in freezer-safe containers. It can last up to 4 months in the freezer.

    3. Canning:

Poultry can be preserved by canning, where it is pressure-cooked and sealed in jars.

This method requires a pressure canner and specific instructions for time and temperature.

Canned poultry can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.

    4. Smoking:

Smoking poultry preserves it by both drying and flavoring it.

The process involves exposing the poultry to smoke from burning wood, which also imparts a distinct flavor.

    months in the freezer.
