The most important and effective way to control ammonia in chicken houses is by formulating diets with lower crude protein values. This is accomplished by formulating diets on a digestible amino acid basis and using as many crystalline amino acids as the least-cost formulation allows. Reducing crude protein in diets will also result in diet cost savings.Obviously, a good ventilation system and a proper bedding material and thickness and/or prompt removal of excreta are important.

Regular Water Changes: Replace 25–50% of the water weekly to dilute ammonia.

Biological Filtration: Ensure the aquarium has a functioning filter with beneficial bacteria to convert ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate (nitrogen cycle).

Avoid Overfeeding: Uneaten food decomposes, increasing ammonia levels. Feed small amounts.

Limit Stocking Density: Avoid overcrowding as fish waste contributes to ammonia.

Use Ammonia Neutralizers: Add chemicals like ammonia detoxifiers if levels spike.

Monitor Regularly: Use test kits to check ammonia levels regularly.

Change the litters regularly and provide enough ventilation.

Ammonia levels can be controlled by improving ventilation to ensure adequate air exchange and by regularly cleaning and removing manure to reduce buildup. Additionally, using bedding materials that absorb moisture can help minimize ammonia release.
