Calcium plays a crucial role in layer feed, primarily for the health and productivity of laying hens. Its primary functions include:
1. Eggshell Formation:
Calcium is a key component of eggshells. Laying hens require a high amount of calcium to produce strong, high-quality eggshells. About 94-97% of the eggshell’s composition is calcium carbonate.
2. Bone Health:
Calcium helps maintain the strength of a hen’s skeletal system. During peak laying periods, hens mobilize calcium from their bones to support eggshell production. Adequate calcium in the diet prevents bone thinning (osteoporosis).
3. Muscle Function:
Calcium is essential for muscle contraction, including those involved in egg-laying processes.
4. Nervous System:
Calcium supports proper nerve signaling, which ensures the hens’ overall physiological functioning.
Optimal Levels in Feed:
Laying hens typically require 3.5-4.5% calcium in their feed, depending on their age and production stage.
