Coccidiosis is caused by Eimeria spp., a protozoan parasite that affects the intestines of poultry. It spreads through contaminated litter, feed and water. Effective control and prevention involve a combination of biosecurity, medication (Anticoccidial drugs), vaccination, nutritional balanced diet, and good management practices.

Anti coccidia drugs should be administered every 10 days in broilers production

I always ensure the litters of the brooding room is not moist. I used medicated feed with coccidiostart . At day 14 the chicks are treated with coccidiosis medicine.

Coccidiosis is indeed a significant disease affecting poultry, particularly in regions like Sri Lanka. Effective control and prevention involve a combination of management practices, medication, and biosecurity measures. Here are some strategies commonly used to control coccidiosis:

    Control Measures

    1. Medication:

      • Coccidiostats: Use anticoccidial drugs in feed or water to prevent and control outbreaks. Common coccidiostats include ionophores (like monensin) and synthetic drugs (like toltrazuril).
      • Treatment: If an outbreak occurs, affected birds may require treatment with specific medications to eliminate the parasites.
    2. Vaccination:

      • Live vaccines are available and can be administered to chicks to provide immunity against specific strains of coccidia.
    3. Rotation of Anticoccidials:

      • Rotate different classes of anticoccidials to prevent the development of drug resistance.

    Preventive Measures

    1. Biosecurity Practices:

      • Implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of coccidia into the flock, including controlling access to poultry houses and maintaining cleanliness.
    2. Good Management Practices:

      • Maintain proper housing conditions, including adequate ventilation, cleanliness, and dryness, to reduce stress and prevent infection.
      • Provide adequate space for birds to minimize crowding, which can lead to increased transmission of coccidia.
    3. Regular Cleaning and Disinfection:

      • Regularly clean and disinfect poultry houses, equipment, and feeding areas to eliminate any coccidia oocysts.
    4. Proper Nutrition:

      • Ensure balanced nutrition to support the immune system of the birds. Nutritional deficiencies can increase susceptibility to infections.
    5. Monitoring and Surveillance:

      • Regularly monitor bird health and conduct fecal examinations to detect coccidial infections early.
      • Keep records of flock performance and health to identify trends and potential outbreaks.
    6. Environmental Management:

      • Implement rotational grazing or housing systems that allow for downtime of facilities to break the coccidia life cycle.
    7. Educating Farmers:

      • Provide training and resources to farmers on the identification, prevention, and management of coccidiosis.

    Conclusion

The control and prevention of coccidiosis in poultry require a multifaceted approach, combining medication, biosecurity, and good management practices. By implementing these strategies, poultry producers can effectively reduce the incidence of coccidiosis and improve the overall health and productivity of their flocks.

Use anti coccidiosis medicine (chemical and ionophore – monovalent or divalent)
