Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting poultry and wild birds. It can cause severe economic losses in poultry farming. The signs of Newcastle disease vary depending on the strain of the virus, the immune status of the birds, and the severity of the infection. The major signs and warning signs include:
1. Respiratory signs: Gasping for air (dyspnea), Coughing and sneezing, Nasal discharge, Rales (abnormal breathing sounds), Swollen sinuses
2. Nervous signs: Twisting of the neck (torticollis), Paralysis of wings and legs, Tremors and head shaking, Loss of balance and circling, Drooping wings
3. Digestive signs: Greenish or watery diarrhea, Loss of appetite (anorexia), Swollen crop, Reduced feed and water intake
4. Reproductive signs: Drop in egg production, Soft-shelled, misshapen, or rough eggs, Watery egg whites, Increased infertility and embryo death in breeding flocks
5. General signs: Sudden death with no obvious signs (in peracute cases), Depression and lethargy, Ruffled feathers, Swelling around the eyes and face, Purple discoloration (cyanosis) of the comb and wattles
Warning signs in flock: Sudden high mortality, Rapid spread of disease among birds, Birds showing respiratory and nervous signs simultaneously
Prevention and control:
Vaccination: Regular ND vaccination is essential.
Biosecurity: Restrict movement of people, birds, and equipment to prevent disease introduction.
Good management practices: Provide clean water, quality feed, and avoid overcrowding.
Early detection and culling: Remove and properly dispose of infected birds to reduce spread.
