Carbohydrates play a vital role in poultry metabolism, serving as a primary energy source and supporting various physiological processes essential for growth, reproduction, and overall health. Let’s break it down 👎
Primary Energy Source
Glucose Production: Carbohydrates, mainly from grains like corn or wheat in poultry feed, are broken down into glucose during digestion. Glucose is the preferred fuel for most cells, especially in the brain, muscles, and red blood cells.
ATP Generation: Through glycolysis and the citric acid cycle, glucose is metabolized to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of cells. Poultry rely on this for daily activities like movement, digestion, and maintaining body temperature (around 41°C / 106°F).
Sparing Protein: Adequate carbohydrate intake prevents the body from breaking down protein (from muscles or feed) for energy, allowing amino acids to be used for growth, feather development, and egg production instead.

5. Heat production (thermoregulation)
6. Improves feed conversion efficiency (FCR).
