Basal metabolism is the energy a bird needs to stay alive and healthy at rest, while minimal metabolism is the very lowest energy needed just to survive in extreme conditions.

    1. Basal Metabolism (Basal Metabolic Rate – BMR): The minimum amount of energy (calories) an animal or person needs to maintain basic life functions at rest – like breathing, circulation, and cell activity.

Conditions for measuring it: At complete rest (not asleep), In a thermoneutral environment (not too hot or cold), After fasting (post-absorptive state, usually 12+ hours), No stress or movement.

Used for: Estimating maintenance energy needs in nutrition, Comparing energy requirements across animals.

    2. Minimal Metabolism: The absolute lowest metabolic rate needed to keep an animal alive – even less than BMR in some cases. It’s often theoretical and rarely measured directly.

When it might occur: During deep torpor, hibernation, or extreme starvation. In very controlled lab conditions

Used for: Understanding extreme survival states, Research in animal physiology or conservation.

Basal metabolism is the energy needed to stay alive in a resting, fasting state — minimal metabolism is even lower and is typically seen only in extreme or unnatural conditions.

Basal metabolism is the energy required to maintain basic physiological functions at rest in a thermally neutral environment. Minimal metabolism refers to the lowest metabolic rate an organism can sustain, often during extreme stress or energy scarcity. In essence, basal metabolism reflects normal resting energy needs, while minimal metabolism signifies survival under adverse conditions.
