Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP) and Monocalcium Phosphate (MCP) in poultry nutrition, both are used as sources of phosphorus and calcium, but MCP is generally better for poultry.
1. Phosphorus availability: MCP has higher bioavailability of phosphorus (around 21 – 22% available P), DCP has lower bioavailability (around 18% available P). MCP – Poultry can absorb more phosphorus from it, which supports better growth and bone development.
2. Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio: MCP has a lower calcium content (~16%), which gives a more balanced Ca : P ratio, DCP has a higher calcium content (~23%), which can disturb the ideal Ca : P balance if not adjusted. MCP- Easier to maintain the proper calcium-phosphorus balance in feed formulation.
3. Suitability for young birds: Young chicks and layers benefit more from highly available phosphorus, especially for skeletal development and eggshell formation. MCP – Especially important in starter feeds and for laying hens.
4. Cost Factor: DCP is usually cheaper than MCP. MCP is more expensive, but the better absorption means you need less to meet requirements. MCP gives better value nutritionally, even if the cost is higher.
– Use MCP when performance and phosphorus absorption matter most (e.g. chick starter, layer feeds). Use DCP if cost is a big concern, but adjust the feed carefully to meet phosphorus needs.

For poultry, monocalcium phosphate (MCP) is generally considered better than dicalcium phosphate (DCP) due to higher phosphorus digestibility and better bone parameters. Studies have shown that MCP leads to improved phosphorus retention, Ca and P in serum, and better bone elasticity in broilers compared to DCP.

Both Dicalcium Phosphate (DCP) and Monocalcium Phosphate (MCP) are commonly used phosphorus sources in poultry feed, but which is better depends on bioavailability, cost, and formulation goals.

Nutrient to price and availability of nutrient is better for DCP considering other raw material and calcium availability from them.

To manage diseases in poultry biosecurity and vaccination are the best tools. Always remember prevention is better than cure.
