Poultry nutritional requirements vary significantly across growth stages, primarily due to changes in their metabolism and growth rates. Generally, chicks require higher protein and energy levels for rapid growth, while older birds need less protein but maintain adequate energy intake. Calcium and phosphorus are also crucial throughout growth, especially for laying hens who need them for eggshell formation.

Poultry nutritional requirements vary by growth stage:

    1. Chicks need a high-protein starter feed (20-24%) to support rapid growth and development.
    2. Growers require a balanced diet (16-20% protein) to promote steady weight gain and muscle development.
    3. Layers need a nutrient-rich diet (16-18% protein) with adequate calcium and phosphorus for optimal egg production and shell quality.

The nutrients needed by birds are water, amino acids, some fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. Energy is a characteristic of certain nutrients (e.g., amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates) that allow birds to perform metabolic reaction and “work” to stay alive, grow, or exhibit other productive traits such as reproduction. The nutrient needs are almost the same for at any stage of live, for any poultry species, and for any vertebrate. The amount of nutrient needed on a daily basis is highly associated with growth rate or velocity. A bird growing faster will need more nutrients that a bird growing slower. Nutrient requirements are determined divided into two main categories: maintenance and production (e.g., growth, laying eggs, etc.). The maintenance requirements will change according to the health status of birds. For example, think about the amount of energy consumed during a febrile episode. Most commercial breeders publish nutrient recommendations for their birds as well as suggestions for feeding phases.
