Calcium is absolutely critical in poultry production, especially for layers but also for broilers and breeders.
Egg Shell Formation (Layers)
Bone Development
Muscle Function and Nerve Transmission
Enzyme Activation
Health and Immunity
Calcium Requirements

Layers: ~3.5-4.5% of diet (very high because of daily egg laying)
Broilers (starter): 0.9-1%
Broilers (finisher): 0.8-0.9%
Breeders: 2-3%
Sources of Calcium in Poultry Feed – Limestone (calcite) 35-39%, Oyster shell 33-38%, Bone Meal 25-30%, DCP 23-25%,

Absorption of calcium in influenced by Phosphorus, Vit D3, Vit C and micro minerals like Zinc, Manganese etc

The essential mineral for strong eggshell formation in poultry is calcium (Ca).
-
Calcium’s Role:
Calcium is the primary structural component of the eggshell, primarily in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It accounts for about 94-97% of the eggshell.
Laying Hens’ Needs:
Laying hens require a daily intake of calcium, with about 4 grams needed to maintain good shell quality.
Other Minerals:
While calcium is the most essential, other minerals like zinc, manganese, and copper also contribute to eggshell quality and quantity. Vitamin D3 also plays a vital role in calcium absorption.

Calcium is the essential mineral for strong eggshell formation in poultry. The eggshell is primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and a sufficient supply of calcium is crucial for a hen to deposit enough calcium to form a sturdy shell.
