Several metabolic disorders are common in poultry, with Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and Ascites being among the most prominent. SDS, also known as “flip-over disease,” is characterized by the sudden death of healthy-looking birds, often related to high carbohydrate intake. Ascites, or “water belly,” involves fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. Additionally, Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome (FLHS), where the liver becomes enlarged and prone to rupture, is also a significant concern in laying hens.

Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) is a common metabolic disorder in poultry, particularly in fast-growing broiler chickens. It’s characterized by the unexpected death of seemingly healthy birds, often found lying on their backs with signs of wing-beating convulsions prior to death. Other common metabolic issues include ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen), fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome, and various skeletal disorders.
