Water accumulation in a bird’s abdomen, also known as ascites, is often caused by heart or liver problems, poor ventilation, or high salt levels in feed. It results from fluid buildup due to poor blood circulation or organ failure, and it’s common in fast-growing broilers raised under stressful or poorly managed conditions.

WHY DOES WATER ACCUMULATE IN THE BIRD’S ABDOMEN?
The following should be considered as general information only; however, you should always seek professional advice, specific to your individual circumstances.
Water accumulation in the abdomen of chickens is most commonly caused by a condition known as ascites or “water belly.” Ascites refers to the buildup of fluid—primarily lymph and blood plasma—in the abdominal cavity. This condition is typically the result of pulmonary hypertension syndrome, where the bird’s heart and lungs cannot keep up with the oxygen demands of the body. This leads to increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, heart failure, and fluid leakage from the liver into the abdomen.
