The 3 main factors to be consider determining floor space for are: age, breed, and ventilation. As the bird increases in age it does so also in body weight and therefore it needs more space with age and higher body weight. To determine the appropriate floor space per bird, we should consider the final age of body weight of the bird in a production system. For example, if we are going to grow birds to 42 days of age, then we should use the floor space needs of a 42-day old broiler to determine the number of birds we can house of known dimensions. The breed of the bird is extremely important in determining growth velocity as well as body weight. Most commercial breeders publish recommendations for their birds throughout the expected productive lifespan of birds assuming a certain performance that is also disclosed. Finally, the type of ventilation plays an important role in determining stocking density or floor space per bird. Animals house under natural ventilation will need more floor space than birds in houses with mechanical ventilation. Tunnel ventilation facilities usually can have lower floor space allowance per bird compared to natural ventilation. Many governments around the world have published guidelines for floor space for different birds (e.g., European Union, https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32007L0043) and some take into account the ventilation system for their space allowance mandates (e.g., Australia, https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/poultry-standards-guidelines-2022.pdf).

Bird toys, food bowls and bird perches need to be taken into considering for occupying space. A good rule of thumb, said Dr. Latas, is to allow for no fewer than 18 inches by 18 inches of floor space per bird, with medium birds requiring at least 24 inches by 30 inches and large birds needing even more space.

The required floor space for birds depends on the bird species and whether they are kept indoors or outdoors. For indoor birds, a general guideline is to provide at least 18 inches by 18 inches of floor space for small birds, with larger birds needing more space. Outdoor birds, like chickens, need a minimum of 4 square feet of indoor space per bird, with additional outdoor space for ranging. More space is always better, and factors like breed, climate, and whether they have access to free-range time play a role.
