In the feed milling process, the most effective Critical Control Points (CCPs) for eliminating biological hazards, such as Salmonella, are the thermal processing stages, specifically conditioning and hygienizing. During these stages, the feed mash is subjected to high-pressure steam at temperatures typically exceeding 80-85 C for a validated residence time, which ensures the thermal destruction of pathogenic bacteria. While extrusion and pelleting also provide significant microbial reduction through a combination of intense heat and mechanical shear, the conditioner is usually the primary CCP where temperature and time are strictly monitored. It is important to note that the cooler and finished product bins, while not elimination points, are critical areas for monitoring because they represent the highest risk for re-contamination via environmental dust or condensation after the feed has been “sanitized” in the heater.

Critical Control Points (CCPs) in the feed milling process include raw material reception, where proper inspections and testing can prevent contaminated ingredients from entering, and pelleting, where high temperatures during processing can effectively eliminate pathogens like Salmonella. Additionally, post-processing storage and packaging are key points for maintaining hygiene and preventing recontamination.

The most effective Critical Control Points (CCPs) for eliminating biological hazards like Salmonella in the feed milling process are thermal processing (pelleting or extrusion) and post-processing contamination prevention strategies, especially those involving cooling and stringent sanitation practices.
