To ensure optimal cow comfort across different seasons, farmers must provide appropriate housing, adjust nutrition and hydration, and adapt management practices to protect the animals from environmental extremes.

    Year-Round Best Practices

Provide Constant Access to Fresh, Clean Water: This is critical in all seasons, as dehydration can occur in both hot and cold weather. Water troughs should be clean, appropriately sized to prevent overcrowding, and easily accessible (no more than 50 feet away).

Ensure Appropriate Housing and Shelter: Provide access to shelter to protect cows from sun, wind, rain, and snow. Housing should be well-designed to allow for free movement and socialization, with ample space to prevent overcrowding.

Maintain Clean, Dry Bedding: Ample bedding (e.g., straw, sand, wood shavings) is essential for comfortable resting and insulation from the ground. Regular cleaning is crucial to prevent moisture buildup and reduce the risk of infections like mastitis and lameness.

Optimize Ventilation: Proper airflow is necessary year-round to remove heat, humidity, and harmful gases like ammonia.

Monitor Cow Health and Body Condition: Regularly observe the herd for signs of stress, illness, or injury, and work with a veterinarian and nutritionist to address any issues promptly.
