Disease like flies and mites can significantly harm poultry health and reduce farm productivity in several ways:

    1. Disease transmission

Flies (e.g., housefly) can carry and spread pathogens such as Salmonella and Newcastle disease. They contaminate feed, water, and equipment.

    2. Blood loss and anemia

Mites (e.g., red poultry mite) suck blood from birds, causing anemia, weakness, and even death in severe infestations.

    3. Stress and irritation

Constant biting and irritation make birds restless, reducing feeding and proper growth.

    4. Reduced egg production

Infested birds lay fewer eggs, and egg quality (size, shell strength) also declines.

    5. Poor feed conversion

Energy is diverted from growth and production to fighting stress and infection, lowering feed efficiency.

    6. Skin damage and infections

Scratching and wounds from mite infestation can lead to secondary bacterial infections.

    7. Economic losses

All these factors combine to cause reduced productivity, higher treatment costs, and lower profitability

flies and mites negatively impact poultry by causing skin irritation, feather loss, anemia, lameness (scaly leg disease), stress, and restlessness. They also transmit pathogens such as fowl pox, ND virus, Salmonella, and helminths, leading to reduced egg production, lower hatchability, poor growth, and increased mortality.

-Scaly leg disease is caused by mite <em jsaction=”” jscontroller=”yHWXO” data-sfc-root=”c” jsuid=”Nhxpof_g” data-sfc-cb=””>Knemidocoptes mutans that burrow under leg leading to discolored, rough , irritant and lameness, if not treated then even loss of leg/toes parts.

    -mites affect comb

-body skin irritation and bird scratch, so cause loss of feathers, discomfort.

-blood sucking by mites leads to anemia, weakness poor growth and performance.

-flies/mosquitoes spread pathogens like fowl pox, ND virus, salmonella, helminths.

-birds are mostly affected by mites at night.

-birds avoid to go nest boxes so more floor eggs, less hatchability.

    -egg production and quality affected.

    -mortality.

    -fever,

    -restlessness,

Insects and mites significantly impair poultry health and productivity by acting as disease vectors, causing direct physical damage, and creating chronic stress that reduces feed efficiency, weight gain, and egg production. Flies, particularly house flies and stable flies, thrive on poultry manure, while mites like the poultry red mite and northern fowl mite act as blood-feeding parasites
