Stocking density in poultry refers to the number of birds or the total live weight (biomass) allocated to a specific unit of usable floor space (typically expressed as birds per square meter or kilograms per square meter). It is a critical management parameter that directly impacts bird welfare, flock health, and economic profitability. While higher stocking densities maximize the yield per unit area of the facility, overstocking restricts natural behaviors, increases environmental stress (due to heat and moisture accumulation), and can degrade air quality, ultimately leading to poor growth rates, higher feed conversion ratios (FCR), and increased mortality.
