Least-cost formulation is a mathematical optimization approach used in feed manufacturing to determine the combination of available ingredients that meets all specified nutritional, functional, and operational constraints at the minimum possible cost. It is typically solved using linear programming, where nutrient requirements (e.g., protein, amino acids, energy, minerals), ingredient inclusion limits, and sometimes processing constraints are defined as equations or inequalities, and ingredient prices are used as objective coefficients. The solution identifies the most cost-efficient formula that satisfies all constraints while maintaining animal performance, although practical implementation often requires additional considerations such as ingredient variability, digestibility coefficients, palatability, supply risk, and impacts on downstream processing like pellet quality.

Least cost formulation is selecting feed ingredients to meet nutrients needs at the lowest cost.
