infectious diseases are mainly caused by living pathogens and are contagious with rapid transmission in flock whereas non infectious diseases involve nutritional, environmental and managemental factors with no bird to bird transmission

The main differences between infectious and non-infectious poultry diseases lie in their causes, spread, and control methods. Here’s a clear comparison useful for poultry management:
🔬 1. Cause
Infectious Diseases
Caused by pathogens such as:
Bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli)
Viruses (e.g., Newcastle disease, Avian influenza)
Parasites (e.g., coccidia, worms)
Fungi
These agents can multiply inside the bird.
Non-Infectious Diseases
Caused by non-living factors, such as:
Nutritional deficiencies (e.g., lack of calcium, vitamins)
Toxins (mycotoxins in feed)
Environmental stress (heat, poor ventilation)
Management errors (overcrowding)
-
Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens (viruses, bacteria, or parasites) and spread rapidly between birds, often requiring biosecurity or vaccination for control. Non-infectious diseases result from environmental, nutritional, or genetic factors such as toxins or mineral deficiencies and cannot be transmitted from one bird to another.
-
Infectious poultry diseases are caused by pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites) that spread between birds, while non-infectious diseases stem from nutritional deficiencies, toxins, or injuries. Infectious diseases are contagious and often cause rapid flock outbreaks; non-infectious diseases are not contagious and are generally tied to specific environmental or dietary mismanagement.
-
infectious diseases are caused by any microorganism or parasite like bacteria, virus, fungus, eimeria, ecto worm (lice, mite, etc) , endo worms ( round worms, tape worms, etc).
While non infectious diseases are caused by nutritional deficiencies like calcium, Zn, iodine, methionine, or toxicities like Cu, Na, mycotoxins,
or
management like heat stress, cold, high ammonia, oxygen deficiency, CO toxicity, CO2 toxicity, .
infectious diseases can be controlled by biosecurity, vaccination,
while
Non infectious controlled by good nutrition and management.

<i style=”font-size: inherit;”>The difference lies in the cause and spread: infectious diseases are triggered by biological pathogens like viruses, bacteria, or parasites and can spread rapidly from one bird to another.
<i style=”font-size: inherit;”>On the other hand, non-infectious diseases result from non-living factors such as nutritional deficiencies, environmental stress, or toxins and are not transmissible between individuals. -
