Feed Nutrition and Management for Pacific white shrimp Penaeus vannamei

The production of Pacific white shrimp Penaeus vannamei is expected to continue to increase, mainly driven by the increase in global population and the increasing public need to consume healthy food. However, several challenges, such as market price fluctuations, decreasing prices at the farm level, and increasing feed prices but not accompanied by increased in feed quality, become the inhibiting factors for production efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability. Since feed accounts for 50 - 70% of production costs, farmers expect the feed used for production able to meet the specific nutritional requirements of shrimp to grow optimally with high yield and survival rates. In this webinar, the concept of ideal protein in feed will be discussed, how to distinguish between true protein and crude protein, and the specific needs for essential and non-essential amino acids, digestible energy, lipids, and other nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, to optimize growth, metabolism, and physiological function of shrimp. Since shrimp are vulnerable to disease infection due to a lack of an adaptive immune system and only depend on the innate immune system, the development of functional feed will also become part of the discussion. Finally, high-quality feed without good feeding management practices will also affect the effectiveness and efficiency of production. For that, the advantage and disadvantage on the use of traditional methods, automatic feeders, and sound-based feeding systems as the feeding management system will be discussed in detail. Last but not least, the method of determining the amount of feed using feeding index and feeding ratio also become part of this course.
