SEC's Aquaculture Program on Farmed Fish Safety and Quality Assurance

The Soy Excellence Center (SEC) is proud to present its "Aquaculture Program on Farmed Fish Safety and Quality Assurance", scheduled for Wednesday, July 17th, 2024, at 12:45 PM Cairo Time. This comprehensive program aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of participants in the critical areas of fish safety and quality assurance.

The event will kick off with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Salah M. Aly, Chairman of the Lakes & Fish Resources Development & Protection Agency, Dr. Ahmed Nasr-Allah, Country Director for Egypt at WorldFish, and Mousa Wakileh, Center Lead of the Soy Excellence Center and USSEC Regional Consultant.

Key sessions include an exploration of best practices for producing high-quality farmed fish, led by Prof. Dr. Salah M. Aly, and innovative approaches to post-harvest management and value addition, presented by Dr. Ahmed Zakar. The program will also cover essential topics such as quality assurance in fish processing by Dr. Hany Shawky and innovations in canning, packaging, and processing waste management by Dr. Hani Elmenshawy.

Participants will gain valuable insights into the economics of fish value addition from Dr. Gamal Azazy and practical tips to avoid common mistakes in fish farming, shared by Dr. Diaa Al-Kenawy. The event will conclude with an open discussion and Q&A session, followed by closing remarks from the distinguished speakers.

This program is designed for aquaculture professionals seeking to improve their practices and ensure the highest standards of fish safety and quality in their operations.

Instructor Bio

Prof. Salah Mesalhy
Chairman, LFRPDA, Cairo, Egypt

Salah Eldin Mesalhy Aly has a Ph D. in Pathology ( 1994 ), Dept. Biol. Sci., Univ. Texas at El Paso , USA/Dept. Path., SCU, Egypt. He is now the Head of Pathology Department, College of Vet. Medicine, Suez Canal University, Egypt. He was the Head of Medical Laboratories Dept., College of Appl. Med. Sciences, Qassim Univ., KSA and the Senior Researcher and Program Leader of Fish Health Research for Africa and West Asia, WorldFish Center, Malaysia. Salah is a Member of the Animal Resources and Fisheries Research Council, Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, Egypt. An Expert at the Arab Union for Wild and Marine Conservation and a Scientific Consultant for the Sinai Reconstruction Authority, Ministry of Housing and Urban Communities. He has a total of105 master & Ph. D. thesis supervision and a total of 192 Scientific papers published.

Prof. Ahmed Zakar
Professor of fish processing and quality control.

Dr. Zakar has about 26 years' experience in the aquaculture field especially in fish processing and quality control. He has studied food science and technology in the faculty of agriculture, Assiut University. He also got MSc and PhD degrees from Zagazig University. He published many international and local research concerning fish processing and preservation and extended shelf life especially with new fishery products. Dr. Ahmed has more than 12 years of professional experience teaching many courses (Food processing, Fish processing and preservation, Fish and meat technology, Fish quality assurance) in Libyan Universities. He works as a mandate at faculty of aquaculture and marine fisheries, Arish University from 2018 to 2022 to teach courses (Technology of fish preservation and processing, Packaging technology, Manufacturing of marine by-products, Fish handling and stowage, Fish factories management, Cooling and freezing technology), He works as a consultant and trainer at the WorldFish Center .He is currently working as head of quality control and fish processing department at CLAR on 2020 till now. He has academic and research experience in capacity building for national and international trainees.

Dr. Hany Shawki
Assistant professor in Nuclear Research Center- Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority

Dr. Hany has over 30 years' experience in Food processing, preservation, quality and safety. He holds a MSc and PHD in Fish processing and hygienic quality by gamma Irradiation.
On 1992, He worked in CLAR (Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research) at Fish processing and quality control Department. On 1996, he was hired in Food irradiation unit – Nuclear Research Center- Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority. He also served as a quality control engineer in several food private companies, and as a quality consultant for several national, international and governmental sectors.
Dr. Hany has more than 10 years of professional experience in teaching Food processing, preservation, quality (HACCP & ISO 9001, 9002, 22000) and safety in Saudi Arabia Universities, and in Capacity building either in Egypt or Gulf Area.
He is currently working as a head of Radioactivity inspection groups for food and industrial materials in all Egyptian ports and as an Assistant professor in Nuclear Research Center- Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority.

Dr. Hany El- Menshawy
CEO of SummerMoon Company for Seafood Appetizers of Smoked Salted Marinated Fish

Dr. Hany is the founder of SummerMoon Egypt Company in Limassol Cyprus for Import and Export.
He is a consultant to (Zimmo Pharma Co.) to establish Elreda factory for Food Industries in Jeddah. He is the Founder of SummerMoon Co. for seafood appetizers on 6th of October, as the first specialized center in Egypt for this industry.
Founder of the first Food Academy in Alexandria in partnership with GIZ in Burg Al Arab city.
Board member of directors of Alexandria Business Association, and head of the dual technical education committee.
Founder & Chairman of the Federation of Small and Medium Industries in Alexandria.
Board member of New Borg Al-Arab City for Scientific Research and Technology.
Board member of Trustees of New Borg El-Arab City.
Member of Supreme Committee for the development of industrial zones in Alexandria Governorate.

Dr. Gamal Azzazy
Prof. of Fish production, Central Laboratory of Aquatic Research Center (ARC)

Prof & Head of Fish Economic Department and Head of Fish Production Unit at Central Lab for Aquaculture Research CLAR, Abbassa, Egypt, and Consultant of Aquaculture for WorldFish Center and CARE International in Egypt.

Prof. Diaa Al-Kenawy
Head of Research, CLAR, Egypt

Diaa works as Head of Research at the Central Lab for Aquaculture Research, CLAR. He currently has over 30 years of experience in aquaculture. Diaa has studied Agricultural sciences and got a PhD in aquatic toxicology 2006 and has participated in and led many research and development projects as a scientist at WorldFish (1998-2021). He is mostly concerned about environment pollution and water quality and impact on fish resources. Diaa is involved in aquaculture and fisheries training programs to teach participants how to produce more affordable and nutritious food from sustainable fish farming. He led the WorldFish Egypt’s research on fish feeds and nutrition through the Global FISH CRP and is enthusiastic of teaching farmers and student’s the best farming practices.
