Susil Silva graduated from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. He obtained a doctoral degree (PhD) in Poultry Nutrition from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in 1997. Susil completed a two-year stint as a Post-doctoral Researcher in Poultry Nutrition at Harper Adams University, UK. He worked as a scientist for more than 25 years at the Veterinary Research Institute (VRI) and eventually became the head of VRI. He also held positions such as Director of Livestock Planning and Additional Director General in the Department of Animal Production Health, Sri Lanka, before moving into his current position.
Susil has supervised PhD, MPhil, MSc, and undergraduate degree programs, both in Sri Lanka and the UK. He has also undertaken both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in many universities in Sri Lanka. Additionally, he served as a board member of the board of studies in postgraduate degree programs at the Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya, and acted as an external examiner in various degree and postgraduate programs at the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, Sri Lanka.
He is also a co-author of over 130 journal articles and conference proceedings and has received numerous National and International research awards, including the President's awards. Susil is a true friend to the livestock industries in Sri Lanka and has been working very closely with the poultry industry for the last 30 years. He has made significant contributions to many national policy developments and served on various National Councils, such as being a member of the Sri Lanka Council for Agriculture Research Policy and the National Feed Advisory Committee in Sri Lanka.
He has also rendered valuable services in various professional associations, holding positions such as the President of the Sri Lanka Veterinary Association, President of the World's Poultry Science Association (Sri Lanka Branch), and President and Registrar of the Sri Lanka Veterinary Council, to name a few.
