For each breed of layer chickens, there’s a standard weight they should attain at maturity, hence, weight is used to measure their maturity and readiness to lay. This is with the assumption that they have been feed the required quantity of feed per time. For the popular commercial layers in Nigeria for example (Isa Brown, Lohmann Brown), we don’t expect to see eggs until they are up to 1.5-1.6 KG of body weight

High body weight means more feed required to maintain the body.
If fat is much, it can also affect fertility negatively. -

Their bodyweight will determine the average egg weight.
