Crumbles as starter feed give the birds a good start. As they eat the whole meal and don’t waste much energy eating up the feed.
Mash is okay for older birds that already developed strong appetite and sporadic eating habit. The more coarse the grains the better for layers.
Pellet is bigger than crumbles and it’s whole meal too. It’s specially recommended for older broilers to reduce loss of energy during feeding.

I recommend mash/crumble for starting, growing and pellets/crumble for laying

Crumble for rearing is a must for me. I do not consider cost of nutrition at brooding stage to give the pullets a good start. For layers, mash is just fine. Your choice of mash or pellets should be based of cost per crate of egg produced.
