**Inclusion Body Hepatitis (IBH)** is a disease affecting poultry, particularly chickens, caused by *Fowl adenovirus (FAdV)*. The condition primarily affects broiler chickens aged 3 to 7 weeks but can occur in other poultry as well. It is characterized by the presence of intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes (liver cells).<div>
</div><div>### Key Features:</div><div>1. **Cause**: The primary causative agent is *Fowl adenovirus* (types 4 and 8 are commonly implicated). It is often associated with immunosuppression in birds, particularly in birds that have been affected by infectious bursal disease (IBD) or chicken infectious anemia (CIA).</div><div> </div><div>2. **Transmission**: The virus is transmitted horizontally via the fecal-oral route. It can also spread through contaminated equipment, feed, or water.</div><div>
</div><div>3. **Symptoms**:</div><div> – Sudden increase in mortality</div><div> – Depression, poor growth, and lethargy</div><div> – Anemia (pale combs, wattles, and skin)</div><div> – Enlarged, pale, and mottled liver with hemorrhages</div><div> – Yellowish diarrhea</div><div>
</div><div>4. **Diagnosis**: </div><div> – **Histopathology**: Presence of basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in liver cells.</div><div> – **PCR/Serology**: Molecular testing for adenovirus to confirm the diagnosis.</div><div> </div><div>5. **Control and Prevention**:</div><div> – Good biosecurity practices to prevent the spread of the virus.</div><div> – Vaccination: Vaccines are available in some regions for the prevention of IBH.</div><div> – Reducing stressors and ensuring good flock management.</div><div> – Managing concurrent diseases that could suppress the immune system, like IBD.</div><div>
</div><div>6. **Treatment**: There is no specific treatment for IBH once the birds are infected. Supportive care and reducing concurrent infections can help manage outbreaks.</div><div>
</div><div>Outbreaks of IBH can lead to significant economic losses in the poultry industry due to high mortality, reduced growth rates, and liver damage in affected birds.</div>
