Coarse limestone will generally be used in diets for egg-lying poultry and not so much for developing poultry (e.g., pullets) and meat-type poultry. The coarser the particle the slower the calcium release tends to be and this is beneficial for egg-laying poultry. In general, darker limestone sources are geologically older, tend to have more impurities (i.e., non-calcium minerals), particularly more magnesium, and the solubility and availability of calcium tends to be lower. Recommendation, use sources of limestone that are as light in color as possible and use the proper particle size for the intended purpose.
