Nutrient digestibility
Digestibility is the proportion of nutrients that enzymes of the gastrointestinal tract break down and are absorbed by the animal to be used for metabolic purposes. Digestibility quantifies the amount of nutrients consumed by animals and subtracts the amount of nutrients excreted. To quantify undigested nutrients, samples are collected and analyzed for the nutrient(s) of interest. Depending on the nutrient of interest (i.e., carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, or minerals) samples are collected from different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Samples for nutrients that can be fermented (e.g., amino acids and carbohydrates) are normally collected at the end of the small intestine, more specifically from the distal ileum. Samples of nutrients not subjected to chemical transformation by microbial activity like minerals can be analyzes from feces or excreta.
