There are two conventional methods of vaccination against fowlpox. Virus is either inoculated into the skin usually using a bifurcated needle (wing web route) or feathers are plucked from the chicken, usually from the thigh, and virus brushed into the exposed follicles. 🕊️

Attenuated fowlpox virus can be given in the drinking water or by oral inoculation.

A bifurcated needle is used to inoculate the skin in the webbed area of the wing, avoiding feathers, muscle, bone, and blood vessels. A satisfactory vaccination is indicated by a high percentage of chickens showing a reaction, such as swelling or a scab at the injection site.
