Here’s a brief guide to transitioning a bird to a new diet:
-
Go Slow: Gradually mix the new food with the old over 2–4 weeks.
- Week 1: 75% old, 25% new
- Week 2: 50/50
- Week 3: 25% old, 75% new
- Week 4: 100% new
-
Make It Appealing: Serve the new food in favorite dishes, at peak hunger times, and try different textures and temperatures.
-
Monitor Closely: Ensure your bird is eating—don’t let it go without food. Watch droppings and behavior.
-
Be Patient: Birds can be picky. Encourage, but never force or starve.
-
Consult a Vet: Especially for diet-specific species or health concerns. Here’s a brief guide to transitioning a bird to a new diet:

Transition a bird to a new diet gradually by mixing the new feed with the old one over several days.
-
25% new, 75% old
50% new, 50% old
75% new, 25% old
100% new.
At 3-4 days interval.

Transitioning a bird to a new diet should be done gradually over 5 to 7 days to avoid stress and digestive upset. Start by mixing a small amount (about 20–30%) of the new feed with the old feed, then gradually increase the proportion of the new diet each day while decreasing the old. Ensure clean water is always available and observe the birds for any changes in feed intake, droppings, or behavior. This slow transition allows the birds’ digestive system and gut microbiota to adjust properly, promoting better nutrient absorption and minimizing production setbacks.
-
Always try to mix old and new feed 50%, then after 3 to 5 days, totally shift

To successfully transition a bird to a new diet, gradually introduce the new food alongside the old food, slowly increasing the proportion of the new food over time. This prevents digestive upset and allows the bird to adjust to the new flavors and textures. Be patient and persistent, as different birds will adapt at different paces.

To transition birds from old diet to New diet, their is a need to gradually acclimatize the birds on old ration to New diet as follows.
*Mix 25%of New diet to 80% of old diet and fed the birds for two days.
*Mix 50% of New diet with 50% of old diet and fed the birds for another two days.
Mix 75% of New diet with 25% of old diet and for another 2days.
Finally change completely to new feed or diet for birds consumption.
Please note that the first six days before changing to New diet completely is called “Acclimatization period.
