There are two conventional methods of vaccination against fowlpox. Virus is either inoculated into the skin usually using a bifurcated needle (wing web route) or feathers are plucked from the chicken, usually from the thigh, and virus brushed into the exposed follicles. There are two conventional methods of vaccination against fowlpox. 1. Arm (deltoid muscle) : Common site for IM injections, such as flu vaccines.

    2. Thigh : Alternate site for IM injections, often used for infants and young children.

    3. Skin : Site for ID injections, such as the tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

Vaccines should be administered through the appropriate route (intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SQ), oral, and intranasal), and administered to the right site on the child. See Administering Vaccines: Dose, Route, Site, and Needle Size.
