To get the NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) content of a feed, you need to send a sample of the feed to a laboratory for analysis where they will use a specific procedure involving a neutral detergent solution to extract and measure the fiber components like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which make up the NDF; essentially, this involves boiling the feed sample in a special solution that dissolves non-fiber components, leaving behind the NDF residue that can then be weighed and calculated as a percentage of the original sample.

- A neutral detergent is used to dissolve proteins, sugars, lipids, and plant pectins from a sample
- The fibrous parts, such as cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose, are left behind
- The residue is dried and weighed to determine the NDF content
