When discussing Clades in poultry, we often refer to the avian influenza (AI) virus variants, which have different clades affecting poultry across the world. The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 and H7 strains have multiple clades, each varying in virulence and geographic spread.
Nigeria and West Africa
most Common Clades:
H5N1 (Clade 2.3.4.4) – Major outbreaks in poultry.
H9N2 – Causes low mortality but affects productivity.
Impact: High mortality, economic losses, and occasional human cases.
Control Measures: Biosecurity & vaccination, Early detection & culling.

Since 2020, the H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b has been a major concern for poultry globally, causing outbreaks in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Other notable clades and variants include H5N8 and H5N6, with H5N1 (clade 2.3.4.4b) becoming predominant in Europe from 2021 onwards. <div>
