Reduce egg production losses and respiratory disease, but doesn’t prevent infection with wild-type Mycoplasma

Advantages of Mycoplasma vaccination:
1.Reduced clinical disease and production losses – prevents chronic respiratory disease, reducing mortality, helps maintain egg production in layers and breeders, improves feed conversion ratio (FCR) and growth in broilers.
2. Reduced disease transmission – Vaccination reduces shedding of Mycoplasma, lowering transmission to younger birds.
3. Lower antibiotic dependence – Reduces the need for long-term antibiotic treatments like tylosin or tiamulin, which can lead to resistance issues.
4. Maintains flock immunity in multi-age farms – Since older flocks can be carriers, vaccination ensures new flocks develop immunity before exposure.
Disadvantages of Mycoplasma vaccination:
1. Mycoplasma vaccines do not prevent infection, only reduce clinical signs and shedding.
2. Need for proper vaccine handling and application.

Mycoplasma vaccination in poultry offers advantages like reduced disease severity, improved animal welfare, and potential for increased profitability through reduced antibiotic use and production losses, but also presents challenges like potential vaccine reactions, limited protection against all strains, and the need for proper management practices.
