It depends on the specific situation, but generally, it’s best to monitor a bird from a distance for a few hours before approaching it, especially if it appears healthy and safe. If the bird is injured or distressed, it’s best to contact a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian immediately

If a bird appears stunned after hitting a window, it’s best to observe it for about two hours before attempting to approach it, according to RSPCA. If it seems recovered within that time, you can try to gently open the container it’s in to see if it will fly away. If the bird is still stunned or unable to fly after two hours, it’s recommended to seek professional help.

Approaching birds after handling or interacting with them depends on a few factors, including the species, the context of the interaction, and their individual temperament. Here are some general guidelines:

    1. Newly Acquired Birds

    • 24-48 Hours: Allow them time to acclimate to their new environment before attempting to interact.

    2. After Handling

    • 1-2 Hours: If you’ve handled a bird, it’s best to give them some time to calm down before interacting again.

    3. During Stressful Situations

    • Immediate Reactions: After a stressful event (like loud noises or changes in the environment), allow several hours for them to settle before approaching.

    4. For Bonding

    • Consistent Interaction: Regular, calm interactions over time will help build trust. Short, gentle approaches are better than long sessions.

    5. Observation of Behavior

    • Read Their Cues: Always observe their body language. If they seem calm and relaxed, it’s usually a good time to approach. If they appear stressed or agitated, wait longer.

By being attentive to their needs and comfort levels, you can foster a positive relationship with your birds.

    1. For Day-Old Chicks (DOCs): Immediate attention is critical after delivery to reduce stress and prevent mortality.

    Within 30–60 minutes, you should:

    a. Unpack chicks gently.

    b. Place them in the pre-heated brooder (temperature 32–35°C).

    c. Provide clean, lukewarm water with glucose or vitamin C. Offer starter feed after about 1–2 hours of water intake

    2. For Older Birds (Transfers or New Batches):

When moving growers or layers into new pens:

    a. Let them rest for 1–2 hours after transport.

    b. Provide clean water first.

    c. Observe quietly before feeding, especially if they are stressed or panting.

    Tips:

    a. Always ensure the house is ready and disinfected 24–48 hours before birds arrive.

    b. Avoid loud noise, rough handling, or overcrowding during approach.

    c. Observe silently for 30–60 minutes to check behavior before interventions.
