Consumer confidence, product quality and safety, types of products, and the emergence and re-emergence of diseases will continue to be major challenges to the current situation and the strategic future of the industry. Foodborne and zoonotic diseases are strictly linked with poultry.

I think the biggest current challenge for the poultry industry is how to contain the transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza to commercial poultry production. In the U.S. the price of eggs has double from September 2024 to January 2025 due to the culling of more than 20 million hens in the last three months. If avian influenza reaches the broiler or turkey production, we will likely see reductions in animal inventory, production of chicken meat and prices will soar. With poultry meat being the highest consumed animal protein in the world, avian influenza has the potential for catastrophic consequences to the industry and human nutrition worldwide.

Maintaining biosecurity in global poultry production faces numerous challenges due to the complexity of modern supply chains, biological threats, and socio-economic factors. Key challenges include:

    1. Disease Transmission

Highly Contagious Diseases: Avian influenza, Newcastle disease, and other pathogens can spread rapidly among flocks.

Wildlife Interactions: Wild birds often act as reservoirs for pathogens, increasing the risk of disease spread to commercial farms.

Global Movement: International trade and migration of live birds, eggs, and poultry products enhance the risk of cross-border disease transmission.

    2. Complex Supply Chains

Globalization: Diverse supply chains with multiple stakeholders make enforcing uniform biosecurity protocols challenging.

Transport Risks: Movement of feed, equipment, and workers between farms can act as vectors for pathogens.

    3. Compliance and Enforcement

Variable Standards: Differences in biosecurity regulations and enforcement across countries and regions.
