Infectious bronchitis (IB) and infectious bursal disease (IBD) are both highly contagious viral diseases that affect chickens. IB primarily affects the respiratory system, while IBD affects the immune system.

Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) has its main implications on the respiratory system and Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) infects an organ that does not even exist in mammals and the latter disease has severe effects on the immunesystem of the bird.

    Infectious Bronchitis (IB)

Cause: A highly contagious viral disease caused by the Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV), a coronavirus.

Target System: Primarily affects the respiratory system but can also involve the kidneys and reproductive system.

Transmission: Spreads through aerosol droplets, contaminated feed, water, and equipment.

    Symptoms:

Respiratory signs: Sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, and rales.

Decreased egg production and poor egg quality in laying birds.

Kidney damage in some strains, leading to nephritis.

Age Group Affected: Birds of all ages can be affected, but young chicks are most susceptible.

Control: Vaccination is the primary preventive measure, along with strict biosecurity.

    Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD)

Cause: A viral disease caused by the Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV), a birnavirus.

Target System: Primarily affects the bursa of Fabricius, a key organ in the immune system of birds.

Transmission: Spreads through direct contact, contaminated litter, water, and equipment.

    Symptoms:

Immunosuppression: Increased susceptibility to secondary infections.

    Diarrhea, ruffled feathers, and lethargy.

Swollen, hemorrhagic bursa in acute cases.

Age Group Affected: Mostly affects young chicks, especially 3-6 weeks old.

Control: Vaccination, good hygiene, and biosecurity are crucial for prevention.
