Darkling beetles (mealworms) generally begin laying eggs 7 to 14 days after emerging from their pupae stage and turning black. Under optimal conditions (

), they can start within a week. Females can lay around 40 eggs per day, with larvae hatching 1–2 weeks later.

Darkling beetles typically start laying eggs about 1 to 2 weeks (7-14 days) after emerging as adults from their pupal stage, though some sources say as soon as a few days to 4-19 days, with peak egg-laying happening in the first few weeks of their 3-12 month adult life. They can lay hundreds to thousands of tiny eggs in their substrate, which look like white dots mixed with frass (beetle droppings).
