Chickens are susceptible to seven Eimeria species, the most common species affecting long-life birds(Breeders and layers) being E. tenella, E. necatrix, E. brunetti, E. acervulina and E. maxima.

In long-lived birds like layers and breeders, the Eimeria species of greatest concern for vaccination are E. acervulina, E. brunetti, E. maxima, E. necatrix, and E. tenella. These species are considered the most pathogenic and economically significant in these types of birds.

Eimeria tenella, Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria brunetti are important. Live attenuated vaccines- Oocysts with reduced pathogenicity is commonly used in areas where coccidia vaccination is common. These oocysts stimulate immunity by mimicking natural infection.

In long-lived birds, Eimeria necatrix and Eimeria tenella are considered critically important with respect to vaccination against coccidiosis. These species are highly pathogenic and cause significant damage to the intestinal mucosa, particularly in older birds. Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria maxima are also important, but E. necatrix and E. tenella tend to be more impactful in long-lived poultry.

In long-lived birds, Eimeria necatrix and Eimeria brunetti are considered most critical in terms of vaccination due to their impact on older birds (8-9 weeks and beyond)
