Metabolic energy loss primarily occurs as heat during cellular processes and the transformation of chemical energy into other forms, like kinetic energy.

Let’s review the energy system. Gross energy (GE) is the total amount of energy in the diet. We subtract the energy of feces from the diet GE we obtain digestible energy (DE). When the energy in urine is subtracted from DE we obtained metabolizable energy (ME). Finally, when heat increment (HI) is subtracted from ME we obtained net energy (NE), which can be partitioned into NE for maintenance and NE for productive purposes like growth and egg production. Most of the HI in animals is cause by digestive, metabolic, and fermentative processes. Additionally, when chickens become endotherms (i.e., “warm blooded”) they generate endogenous heat to maintain body temperature, which in turn assures proper digestion and metabolic processes. Therefore, the “true” source of ME loss is HI.

The loss of metabolic energy refers to the inefficiencies that occur during energy conversion processes within an organism. In metabolism, energy is obtained from food (or other sources) and converted into usable forms, mainly ATP (adenosine triphosphate), but some energy is lost during these processes. This loss primarily occurs through:

    1. Heat production: A significant portion of metabolic energy is dissipated as heat. This is an inevitable byproduct of biochemical reactions, such as cellular respiration, where not all energy is captured in ATP.

    2. Inefficiency in energy transfer: In processes like the electron transport chain, some energy is lost due to imperfect transfer and conversion, rather than being captured in ATP.

    3. Digestive and absorption inefficiencies: In animals and humans, not all the energy in food is absorbed or used. Some energy is lost through the process of digestion and waste elimination.

    4. Biosynthesis: The process of building complex molecules (like proteins, fats, and carbohydrates) from simpler ones also consumes energy, but some energy is lost in the form of heat or through incomplete processes.
