Essential oils can reduce the levels of pathogens in the gut, such as Salmonella bacteria and E. coli.

To be clear, the only product capable to replace an antibiotic is another antibiotic. Further, the routine use of antibiotics in poultry must be discontinued. Antibiotics should be used to treat birds experiencing bacterial diseases under direct veterinarian prescription and according to governmental regulations. When antibiotics are removed from feed used in healthy, normal, or non-sick birds and a reduction in performance is experienced it indicates a high presence of pathogens in the environment. Each farm needs to pay attention and improve biosecurity, management, and cleaning and disinfection practices, as well as water quality, before thinking about the inclusion of feed supplements with known, reported, or purported antimicrobial activity. In farms with a clean environment and proper management the inclusion of antibiotics in feed or water will have no beneficial effect because there is a minimal presence of pathogens challenging the birds.
