To optimize growth, it is true that we need to provide birds with the best diets we can possibly formulate. However, the best diet in the world is not going to improve the performance of birds if the housing, environmental, husbandry, and management practices are not optimized as well. Because birds need amounts (e.g., grams or milligrams) of nutrients on a daily basis, certain adjustment may be needed to a formulation to account for feed intake discrepancies from the breeder’s guide. Normally, if feed intake is lower than recommended, then the density of nutrients in a diet could be increased to provide the adequate daily amount of nutrients needed. However, of the reduction in feed intake is cause by poor ventilation, lighting, housing conditions, water quality, feeders and waterers, high stocking density, pathogen pressure, and other environmental conditions then increasing the density of nutrients in a diet may not results in better growth performance.

Feed formulation requires a thorough understanding of the: (a) nutrient requirements of the class of poultry (e.g., egg layers, meat chickens or breeders); (b) feed ingredients in terms of nutrient composition and constraints in terms of nutrition and processing, and. (c) cost and availability of the ingredients.
