Metals suitable for die making include zinc alloys, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, copper, brass, and specialized tool steels like D2, with the best choice depending on factors like complexity, run length, and the specific application for which the die is intended.

Pellet die metallurgy is a complex question, with no ‘simple’ answer. Sources of information can be die manufacturers, pellet press manufacturers. The choice of material depends on the ingredients most likely to be used in formulas which will relate to the ‘life’ of the die. Also proper die and roller maintenance are important.

The most suitable metal for a pellet mill die is alloy steel (like 42CrMo or 20MnCr5) for most general purposes, or stainless steel (like 4Cr13 or X46Cr13) for corrosive or oily materials.

Die making requires metals such as aluminum, zinc, magnesium, Copper Alloys, Lead, and Tin Alloys, which are commonly used non-ferrous metals.
