Extrusion is mainly the cooking of an ingredient or mixture of ingredients by using heat, moisture ( in form of steam), and pressure. Extrusion makes the volume to expand and this lower the density and ensures floating.

Extrusion is a key process in feed milling, especially for producing high-quality pellets for aquaculture, pet food, and some livestock feeds. It involves cooking and shaping feed ingredients under heat, pressure, and moisture.

Extrusion in a feed mill is a process that uses heat, pressure, and shearing forces to transform raw feed ingredients into a desired shape and texture, often pellets or granules. This process enhances digestibility, palatability, and can also inactivate anti-nutritional factors.

Is it necessary for livestock feed (ruminants) to go through extrusion processes??

Batching ; IF its a mill that also has feed milling, the batching is usually done via same line.

Grinding : the materials batched will be grinded into fine materials.

Extrusion : extrusion process began via the extruder ,water and steam is added and gelatinization takes place, extrusion into desire size via the die plate.

Drying : depending on the throughput or flow rate, that will determine how low it stays in the dryer which is a water of moisture and water activity required as final product.after drying the dryed materials goes via the through sifter to remove fines particles and it goes through the coater.

FAT COATING :refined soya oil is added from the coater.and it goes to the process or bagging bin where the QC will check the pellets for water activity and moisture.if PASS it goes to bagging line.

BAGGING ; prior to bagging another sifter remove the fines BEFORE going into bags.

SEWING ; bags are sew and stacks on pellets

The extrusion process in a feed mill involves several key steps:

    1. Grinding – Raw materials are ground into a fine powder for uniform mixing and smooth extrusion.

    2. Mixing – Ingredients are thoroughly mixed to create a balanced feed formula.

    3. Conditioning– Steam and moisture are added to soften the mixture and improve cooking during extrusion.

    4. Extrusion – The conditioned mix is pushed through an extruder where it’s cooked under high temperature, pressure, and shear, then forced through a die to shape the feed.

    5. Drying– The extruded feed is dried to remove moisture and improve shelf life.

    6. Cooling– The hot, dried pellets are cooled to prevent mold and preserve quality.

    7. Packaging – The final feed is packed for storage or delivery.

In a feedmill, extrusion is a process where feed ingredients are cooked and shaped using high temperature, pressure, and moisture. The process involves feeding ingredients into an extruder, which uses screws and friction to increase temperature and pressure. The mixture is then forced through a die, where it expands and is cut into pellets.
