It is commonly quantified using the coefficient of variation (CV%), where lower values indicate better uniformity (typically <10% for macro-ingredients and <5% for micro-ingredients/premixes).
It is critical in feed production because it directly impacts nutritional consistency, animal performance, and safety. Poor uniformity can lead to under- or over-supply of nutrients, additives, or medications, resulting in reduced growth, health issues, regulatory non-compliance, and economic losses. Additionally, uniform mixing ensures that downstream processes like pelleting perform consistently, improving pellet quality and process efficiency.
