How might soy affect thyroid function?
Some warn that soy may negatively affect thyroid function, but in healthy people with normal thyroid function, soy is generally safe.
Soy foods may affect the absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone. This does not necessarily mean patients on thyroid replacement need to avoid soy-based foods. However, they may be cautioned to limit the amount of soy they consume throughout the week. Additionally, soy can limit the ability to absorb synthetic thyroid hormones and shouldn’t be consumed for at least two hours after taking medication. Patients with thyroid conditions should discuss this with their health care provider. How might soy affect thyroid function?
