To encourage increased feed intake in poultry during winter, the primary strategy is to maintain the thermal neutral zone by providing supplemental heating and insulating the housing to prevent the birds from using dietary energy solely for thermoregulation. Increasing the nutrient density of the diet, specifically through the addition of high-quality fats or oils, compensates for the increased metabolic demand. Additionally, ensuring that the drinking water is slightly warmed (approximately 15–20°C) prevents birds from reducing their intake due to cold water. Furthermore, extending the photoperiod with artificial lighting to provide 14–16 hours of light ensures the birds have sufficient time to consume the necessary volume of feed during the shorter winter days.

Warmth + accessible, tasty, high-energy feed boosts intake.

Proper house temperature, insulation, avoid drafts, add fats/oils to meet higher energy needs, pellets or crumbles, keep feeders full, fresh feed multiple times a day, especially mornings, keep water clean and unfrozen.

To encourage more winter feed intake in poultry, offer energy-dense foods like corn/fats, provide warm water/mash, give high-protein treats (mealworms), scatter feed to encourage foraging, and add supplements like apple cider vinegar for appetite, while ensuring balanced nutrients in their main diet to fuel body heat and egg production.

To encourage winter feed intake in poultry, increase dietary energy with fats/oils/corn, offer warm mash, provide more frequent meals, ensure unfrozen water, scatter feed for activity, and use supplemental lighting to stimulate appetite and maintain warmth, as they burn more calories in the cold.
