Most good quality eggshells from commercial layers contain approximately 2.2 grams of calcium in the form of calcium carbonate. About 95% of the dry eggshell is calcium carbonate weighing 5.5 grams. The average eggshell contains about .3% phosphorus and .3% magnesium and traces of sodium, potassium, zinc, manganese, iron and copper.

The eggshell of layer eggs is primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), which constitutes about 94-97% of the shell’s total weight. The remaining composition includes small amounts of organic matrix and other minerals. Here is a breakdown of the composition:

    1. Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃):

Makes up about 94-97% of the shell.

Provides strength and rigidity to the shell.

    2. Organic Matrix:

Accounts for about 2-3% of the shell.

Composed of proteins and polysaccharides, which play a role in shell formation and structure.

    3. Other Minerals:

    Magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃): About 1%.
