A mixture of wood shavings and rice hulls is sometimes used to balance absorbency and aeration.

Disease control depends not just on material, but also on management — frequent turning, moisture control, and regular litter replacement are key.

Regardless of material, maintaining dry, friable litter is the single most important factor in preventing litter-borne diseases.A mixture of wood shavings and rice hulls is sometimes used to balance absorbency and aeration.

Emphasis on proper litter management irrespective of the bedding materials should take the priority. Proper litter management by maintaining absolutely dry litter, avoid moisture, changing the litter with fresh wood shavings/dust when appropriate.

Note; bedding materials should not be stored in an enclosure that is not well ventilated because of mould growth. And bedding materials can also be sprayed with disinfectant such as formaldehyde and the likes.
