Traps usage on poultry farms are mainly used to monitor insect populations, guide pest control decisions, reduce pest numbers, and evaluate management strategies. They are a key part of integrated pest management (IPM) programs for poultry production.

Traps serve as a critical component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on poultry farms, acting as both a primary monitoring tool and a localized control measure for pests such as the house fly (Musca domestica) and the lesser mealworm (Alphitobius diaperinus). Sticky traps and pheromone-baited jugs are strategically placed to capture adult flies, providing farmers with a “scout” mechanism to quantify pest populations and determine if chemical intervention thresholds have been reached. Additionally, specialized light traps and shelter-style traps can suppress localized infestations and prevent larvae from migrating into the insulation or structural components of the poultry house. By focusing on physical capture, these traps reduce reliance on broadcast insecticides, thereby slowing the development of pesticide resistance and minimizing chemical exposure for birds.
